Please join the Sustainable Design Committee for our first lunch seminar of the year. Joining us will be Mike Donovan with Ecocem US to present ACT, an innovative low-carbon cement product which can reduce up to 70% of the clinker used in cement production. Mike will also share about Ecocem's first US project, a proposed Terminal and Milling Operation at the Port of Los Angeles. We hope you're able to join us!

Mike Donovan graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1984 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and became a licensed professional engineer in Alabama in 1992. He has spent his entire career in the concrete industry, holding technical and leadership roles across the country. His experience includes serving as a Technical Service Engineer for Blue Circle Cement in Alabama (1998–2006), Central Concrete in San Jose, California (2006–2015), and later as President of the startup Geofortis, LLC (2015–2024). He currently serves as Technical Director for Ecocem Materials, a European leader in low carbon cement technologies.
During his time at Central Concrete, Mike’s work became centered on decarbonizing concrete. His team partnered with Climate Earth to introduce the first concrete EPDs in the United States. Under his technical leadership, Central Concrete pushed the boundaries of low carbon mix design, achieving cement replacement levels of up to 70% on major construction projects and making a 50% replacement mix the company’s most commonly used daily product.
In 2015, Mike joined Geofortis as President, where he led the discovery, evaluation, testing, and commercialization of a natural pozzolan in Utah—an important development as natural pozzolans become increasingly vital to supplement dwindling SCM supplies in the western U.S.
In his current role with Ecocem, Mike is responsible for bringing the company’s ultra low CO₂ binder technologies to the U.S. market, which is the focus of today’s presentation.
Despite a long and rewarding career, Mike considers his greatest accomplishment to be his family. He has been happily married to his wife, Marjorie, since 1982. They have two grown children, Anne and Michael, who are thriving in their own lives and marriages, and they are proud grandparents to three wonderful grandchildren: Evelyn (7), Victoria (5), and Arlo (4).
